Subtasks are available in the Do core app and across all legacy plans (Essential, Pro, Standard, Ultimate, Core, Growth, Performance, Enterprise). Learn more about our Plans & Pricing.
Depending on your site's work planning method, you can organize work with just regular tasks or in a two-level hierarchy with parent tasks and subtasks.
The task's type is not set in stone – Scoro lets you convert an existing task to a different type, giving you the full flexibility to adjust your project plans as needed. You can change a task's type in Scoro in the following ways:
- From the task modify view: convert a regular task to a subtask, or a subtask to a regular task, using the Parent task field.
- From the task list: convert multiple subtasks to regular tasks at once with a bulk action.
This article will walk you through the process of changing the task's type from the task list and the task modify view and everything you need to know about limitations.

1. Changing a task's type in the task modify view
To change a task's type from the task modify view:
- Open the task you want to convert to another task type and click the Modify button.
- Use the Parent task dropdown field to change the task's type:
-
To convert a subtask to a regular task, remove its parent from that dropdown field.
-
To convert a regular task to a subtask, select its parent from that dropdown field. The dropdown will let you choose from regular tasks and parent tasks within the same project that aren't marked as done yet.
-
To convert a subtask to a regular task, remove its parent from that dropdown field.
- Save the changes.
Key things to remember about changing task types:
- Scoro supports a two-level task hierarchy – meaning you can have parent tasks with subtasks, but you cannot move a subtask under another subtask.
- Tasks marked as done cannot be converted to a different task type. Tasks cannot be moved under a regular task or parent task that is marked as done.
- Non-billable tasks can be moved under billable and non-billable tasks. Billable tasks can only be moved under billable parent or regular tasks.
- Parent tasks cannot be converted to subtasks because they already have subtasks under them.
- Tasks without a project cannot be converted to subtasks.
2. Convert subtasks to parent tasks in the task list
Converting subtasks to parent tasks in the task list is useful when you need to:
- Restructure your project plan: Quickly turn multiple subtasks into parent tasks without modifying them individually.
- Switch your site to the 'Without subtasks' work planning option: Since Scoro requires all subtasks to be cleared before switching from the 'With subtasks' or 'Advanced mode' work planning options, you can convert them to parent tasks to keep your data and time logs intact. Consider whether some of the subtasks can be deleted rather than converted. Learn more about work planning options.
To convert multiple subtasks to parent tasks at once:
- Go to the Tasks module to open the task list.
- Filter the list view – select 'Subtasks' in the Task type filter, and apply any other filters to find the subtasks you want to convert.
- If you are converting all subtasks on your site to switch to the Without subtasks work planning option, filter out all users and done and not done tasks to capture every subtask on your site.
- Select the subtasks you want to convert by ticking the checkboxes next to them on the left. An additional bar with bulk actions will appear.
- Click the Convert to parent tasks button in the bulk action bar and confirm your choice.
Once you've confirmed the conversion:
- The selected subtasks will become regular tasks and they will no longer be linked to their parent task, allowing you to add subtasks under them if needed.
- All other data that was previously on the converted subtasks – including links to projects, contacts, quotes, comments, and time entries – remains intact.
If you've converted your subtasks to parent tasks so you can switch over to the 'Without subtasks' work planning option, you can now go to Settings > Work and projects > Calendar and tasks and update your work planning option selection.
